WOW !!!:

What else can you say about Laingholm Idol 2011 other than WOW !!! What a performance, what a show. The singers were brilliant, the dancers amazing it was a show to rival the very best. To all the students that participated, either singing or dancing you are all amazingly talented. To the team of teachers and helpers who put the show together, your talent and hard work is one of the things that makes this school ‘The Greatest Little School in the Universe’.

Look out for more photographs and comments from the students who participated in the contest in this months ‘Roundabout’.

To our key sponsor Mr Neil Heathcote from Ocenia Sound, thank you for expertise, the loan of your equipment and your patience and good humour while organised chaos reigned around you.

Welcome:

This newsletter we welcome Elyn Garcia who joins the super talented students and extremely talented Ms Aldworth in Room 17. Welcome Elyn to ‘The Greatest Little School in the Universe’ and welcome to the Garcia family to ‘The Greatest Little Community in the Universe’

Powhiri:

The second powhiri for the year to welcome new students, and their families, to the school is planned for Friday 27th May. During this ceremony our Local MP David Cunliffe will officially welcome all the new students, and their families, who have recently joined the school. Please put the date in your diary now, we would love to see you.

Discovery Missions:

Discovery Missions for the term are already underway with the Year 1 and Year 2 programme now complete. I must admit I did like the hedgehog sculptures made from fruit and marshmallows. They looked as good as they tasted. These extension programmes are proudly sponsored by Friends of the School (FOTS) and are one of the most popular - and expensive programmes - we run here at ‘The Greatest Little School in the Universe’. Supporting FOTS events, like the Trivia night next month, directly benefits your child by enabling us to offer a greater range of learning opportunities.

  • Year 3 and Year 4 Discovery Missions: Monday 13th June and Tuesday 14th June

Trees & The Secret Garden:

After four months of patient negotiation with the Ministry of Education we have been successful in obtaining the necessary money to trim some of the trees in the Secret Garden. The trees to be trimmed have been identified as a potential hazard and all have shed large branches in recent times. One of the trees that has been identified is the large macrocarpa in the Secret Garden. The plan is to not completely remove the tree as the roots are stabilising the bank, we also think that the remaining - quite large base - would provide an ideal base for a carving, sculpture or similar art work. If you have any ideas as to how we might create this artwork please contact us, we would love to hear from you.

Hopefully the trees will be trimmed in the next month and the Secret Garden can be used again. Thank you to Mr Jeff McLarn who has worked tirelessly as our stand-in property manager while we went through the process to appoint Ralph. As a result of his hard work the Secret Garden is looking superb and the wasps encouraged to seek shelter in other places.

The time has come the Walrus said to speak of many things. Of shoes and ships and sealing wax of cabbages and kings.
